When someone sees your message on Instagram, you’re able to see the “Seen” read receipt just below your sent message. Similarly, when you see someone’s message on Instagram, they’re able to look at whether you have seen their message or not.
And that’s frustrating for some people!
What if you’re just ignoring them and don’t want to let them know that you have seen their message?
Or what if you’re just not in the mood to reply to people?
Whatever the reason, you may want to turn off read receipts on Instagram.
But is that even possible? Does Instagram support this feature and allow people to turn off read receipts?
We know – WhatsApp allows its users to do that. But what about Instagram?
Throughout this blog post, we’ll cover:
- Can You Disable or Turn Off Read Receipts on Instagram?
- How to Check People’s Messages on Instagram Without Them Knowing
Let’s have a look.
Can You Disable or Turn Off Read Receipts on Instagram?
As of this writing, it’s not possible to disable or turn off read receipts on Instagram. While WhatsApp does offer the functionality to turn off read receipts, the Instagram dev team hasn’t rolled out an update that allows Instagram users to disable or turn off their read receipts on the platform.
However, there are a few workarounds you can apply. For example, you can just view the message by going offline or turning on the airplane mode. Or you can just read the message from the notification bar.
Don’t worry – allow me to show you how to check people’s messages on Instagram without them knowing.
How to Check People’s Messages on Instagram Without Them Knowing
Two of the most popular ways to see people’s messages on Instagram without them knowing include seeing messages after disabling the internet connection or turning on the airplane mode or by checking them from the notification bar. But in order to be able to check someone’s message from your notification bar, it’s important to make sure that you’ve turned on notifications for Instagram direct messages.
Let’s dive deeper into both the tactics:
- Turn On Airplane Mode or Disable Your Internet Connection
- Turn On Notifications for Instagram Direct Messages
Turn On the Airplane Mode or Disable Your Internet Connection
For this method to work, you need to keep your internet connection turned off for the entire duration you don’t want the sender to know that you’ve seen their message. As soon as you turn on your internet connection or disable the airplane mode, the sender will be able to see that you’ve seen their message.
Here’s how the method works:
Step I – When you have received someone’s message, if you want to see it without letting the sender know that you have seen it, then you need to turn on airplane mode. Or you can just disable your internet connection. Make sure that you are not connected to either Wi-Fi or mobile data.
Step II – Now, you can head over to Instagram Direct Messenger and open the sender’s Instagram chat. Since your internet is turned off, there’s no way that Instagram will know that you have seen this message – which is why Instagram won’t be able to convey the message to the sender.
Step III – Turn on your internet or turn off your airplane mode only when you want the sender to get the “Seen” message. As soon as the internet connection is restored, the Instagram application will convey that you have opened the message to Instagram Servers. And from there, the sender can see the “Seen” confirmation.
But this is not the appropriate way. You can’t possibly turn off your internet connection for a whole day if you don’t want the person to see that you have seen their message.
Instead, a good workaround is checking the sender’s Instagram message from within the notifications.
Turn On Notifications for Instagram Direct Messages
We’re all used to reading messages from Notifications – whether it’s WhatsApp or Instagram. But if you don’t get notifications, maybe you have turned it off from within the application.
To turn notifications, back on, follow the exact steps I’ve listed down:
Step I – Launch Instagram and log in to your profile, if you aren’t already logged in. Now, click on your display picture to head over to your profile in the bottom-right corner of the application.
Step II – Click on the hamburger menu or three-vertical-line in the top-right corner. From there, you’ll see numerous options like:
- Your activity
- QR code
- Close Friends
- Covid-19 Information Center
Click on “Settings.” Under Instagram Settings, again you’ll see numerous options, of which you need to click on “Notifications” to turn on Instagram notifications.
Step III – Under Notifications, select “Messages and Calls” to access notifications settings for Instagram messages and calls. From here, you can turn on Instagram notifications. Under “Messages,” if you see tick-mark next to “Off,” then your Instagram message notifications have been turned off. To enable them, make sure to tick-mark “On.”
Congratulations – now you’ll receive Instagram message notifications from people. Make sure that you just check the message and don’t really tap on the “Like” button in your Notifications.
While you can’t really turn off the read receipts on Instagram, these workarounds are used by most Instagram users. If the Instagram dev team rolls out any official updates, I’ll definitely update this blog post and keep you in loop.
I hope I was able to help you get answers to your questions.
