Did you know that WhatsApp is the world’s third-most used social media platform with over 2 billion monthly active users? Initially launched in 2009, WhatsApp has come a long way forward.

And while you may already know what grey/blue ticks next to your messages mean, if you are seeing a clock icon next to the WhatsApp message you have rolled out or someone’s DP and don’t really know what the significance of the clock is, allow me to help you out.

FUN FACT – Blue Ticks have not always been a part of WhatsApp. It’s just another one of the updates rolled out by the WhatsApp dev team.

Over the course of the past few years, the WhatsApp dev team has rolled out some serious updates. And now with Meta having had acquired WhatsApp, we’ll see some new ones in the near future.

So, what exactly does the WhatsApp clock icon actually mean? To help you better understand the significance of the clock icon, I’ll be covering the following topics in this blog post:

Without further ado, let’s dive into these topics straight away.

What Does the Clock Icon Next to Your WhatsApp Message Mean?

When you send someone a message on WhatsApp and see the clock icon, then it means that WhatsApp isn’t able to send the message to the person due to either poor internet connectivity or platform issues. Maybe, your internet connection is just too slow to send and transmit the message. Or what if the WhatsApp servers are down?

As soon as the message is delivered, this clock icon will turn into a single tick. And when the message is successfully received by the recipient, then this single tick will turn into a double tick. When the recipient finally sees this message, it’ll further turn to a double tick.

If you see the clock icon for an extended time period, then there’s a problem along your network’s routing path. You can either try switching to a completely different internet connection or check whether WhatsApp servers are down. Sometimes, it may also be due to an outdated WhatsApp application.

To help you solve the problem, allow us to list down the potential issues that may be behind the clock icon on WhatsApp.

The 3 Reasons You May Be Getting the Clock Icon Next to Your WhatsApp Message

Following is the list of potential problems why you are seeing the clock icon next to your WhatsApp messages:

Slow Internet Connection

Poor internet connection is one of the most common reasons behind clock icons next to WhatsApp messages. So, if your internet connection is poor, then we’d advise you to switch to another network and try if the issue is getting resolved. Maybe, the problem is with your ISP. Or maybe, a malfunctioning router may be causing the issue.

Verify your cellular network. If it’s weak, try switching to a functional Wi-Fi. And if the clock icon doesn’t turn to a single tick, try restarting your phone.

You can also toggle on and off your phone’s Airplane mode. Sometimes, when we move from a location with no network to a location with a good network, some smartphones are not fully able to detect it. So, it’s better to try toggling on and off the airplane mode.

If the issue still doesn’t go away, try using a completely different application. Maybe, try playing a video on YouTube. If you’re able to successfully play a YouTube video or send snaps on Snapchat, then the reason behind the clock icon next to WhatsApp messages is not a slow internet connection.

Potential OS Malfunctioning

Whether you’re using an Android device or iPhone, OS malfunctioning can result in issues with applications, including WhatsApp. Maybe, it’s a temporary bug. Or maybe your device is recovering from OS malfunctioning. If you think the device is slower or functioning improperly, my advice would be to restart the device.

WhatsApp Servers are Down

Even though WhatsApp is a two billion monthly active users strong community, at the end of the day, it’s an application. And applications are always subject to issues. If it isn’t a network issue or OS malfunctioning, try checking whether WhatsApp servers are down.

Click HERE to head over to DownDetector to check the status of WhatsApp servers.

Or you can just head over to Twitter and look up #whatsapp or #whatsappdown hashtags and if WhatsApp servers actually are down, you’ll see people tweeting all about it on Twitter.

Seriously – Twitter is awesome.

You can try other solutions like:

  • Clearing WhatsApp Cache or Storage
  • Uninstalling & Reinstalling WhatsApp
  • Resetting Network Settings on Your Phone
  • Updating WhatsApp

And if the issue still persists, we’d advise you to contact WhatsApp support straight away.

You can do this on Android devices by following these steps:

  • Launch WhatsApp
  • Tap on the three-vertical-dotted-line in the top-right corner of the application.
  • Click on “Settings.”
  • Select “Help.”
  • Click on “Contact Us.”
  • Type in your problem in the “Tell us how we can help” section.
  • Click on “Next.”

On iOS devices, follow these steps:

  • Launch WhatsApp
  • Click on “Settings” in the bottom-right corner
  • Select “Help.”
  • Tap on “Contact Us.”
  • Type in your problem in the “Tell us how we can help” section.
  • Click on “Next.”

Can You Delete WhatsApp Messages with Clock Icon Status?

Yes, you can delete messages with clock icon status. When you hold the message that has not been sent and select delete, you’ll see the following options:

  • DELETE FOR ME – If you select this option, the receiver will never receive the message.
  • DELETE FOR EVERYONE – If you select this option, again the receiver will not receive the message. But you will see the message “This message has been deleted” on your end.

On the other hand, if you are seeing the clock icon next to someone’s profile picture, then there’s a completely different reason behind it. Allow me to explain.

What Does the Clock Icon Next to Someone’s Profile Picture Mean?

The WhatsApp clock icon next to someone’s profile picture is due to WhatsApp’s “Disappearing Messages” feature. Upon enabling disappearing messages on WhatsApp, the new messages on WhatsApp will automatically disappear after a set period of time.

This feature can either be activated for individual chats or all. Let’s say I want to turn on the “Disappearing Messages” feature for Ashish. This means that every message we send to each other after enabling the feature will be deleted after a set period of time.

To enable the “Disappearing Messages” feature, you need to click on the person’s saved name on the chat screen. Scroll down to find the “Disappearing messages” option. When you turn it on by setting the message timer (24 hours, 7 days, 90 days), you’ll see the clock icon on the lower-right corner of the person’s profile picture.

And that’s what the significance of the Clock icon on WhatsApp is. If you are getting the clock icon next to your WhatsApp message, then it means the message hasn’t been sent from your end. However, if it’s next to someone’s profile picture, then the Disappearing Messages feature with that person has been turned on.
